Traditional "Folk" & World music

National Folk Musician ("Riksspelman") since 1979, composer, professor and a member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Music since 2009, Mats Edén is without doubt one of Sweden's foremost practitioners of folk- and world music. Mats is a highly respected musician worldwide, and besides being an established solo musician he also partakes in a number of configurations - both permanent and temporary. He has toured Europe, USA and India with numerous musicians and groups - including Groupa, Tina Quartey, Ale Möller, Lena Willemark, Ellika Frisell, Gunnel Mauritzson bands amongst others.

Mats was born in 1957 in Södertälje and raised in Värmland in a musical family. His interest in folk music was inherited through his stepfather, Sven Edén, a well known and well acclaimed fiddler. Mats was taught to play the violin by Sigvard Stenberg at Karlstad Municipal Music School in the mid-60's.

Combined with life as a musician, Mats is also active as a composer and teacher. He studied composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo 1983-1987 and is a member of the Society of Swedish Composers - FST and Swedish Composers of Popular Music (SKAP). In May 2009 Mats Edén was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Since its inception in 1993, Mats Edén works part-time as a teacher at the folk-pedagogical education programme at the Malmö Academy of Music.

Since 1976 he has held numerous courses and workshops - both in Sweden and abroad. As a guest teacher/lecturer, his visits include the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, The Funen Academy of Music in Odense, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.

WHAT THEY SAY
